New Iberia’s proposed sales tax sparks public funds debate

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) — New Iberia city leaders are considering a new 1% sales tax to help fund improvements at Lagniappe Village. A final vote on the proposed sales tax is scheduled for July 7.

The proposed tax faces opposition from some residents and business owners who are concerned about the use of public funds for a private developer. City leaders contend the tax is a tool to compete with other communities for new businesses.

Paige Symuong, a New Iberia resident, stated her opposition to the plan. “This one percent tax is to reimburse the private developer,” Symuong said. “I just don’t feel like we should be paying expenses for a private company with our tax dollars.”…
