ATLANTA, GEORGIA — A severe storm threat is in place for Saturday across northern Georgia and surrounding areas, with damaging wind gusts exceeding 60 mph capable of knocking down trees, limbs, and power lines across the affected region. The threat zone covers a broad swath including Atlanta, Gainesville, Rome, Calhoun, Blairsville, Carrollton, Athens, and Eatonton, stretching from the Tennessee border southward through the metro Atlanta area and toward Macon and Augusta.
Storm coverage is expected to be scattered, meaning not everyone will see severe weather, but where storms do develop they can become very strong. A brief tornado is also possible though the tornado threat remains on the lower end for this event.
Damaging Wind Gusts the Primary Hazard Saturday
The main severe weather concern Saturday is damaging wind gusts of 60 mph or greater, which carry the potential to bring down trees, large limbs, and power lines across the northern Georgia severe threat zone. These types of wind events can cause significant property damage and widespread power outages even from a relatively scattered storm coverage pattern.
Brief Tornado Cannot Be Ruled Out
While the tornado threat with this system is expected to stay well to the west of the primary coverage area, a brief tornado cannot be completely ruled out with the strongest cells that develop Saturday. Forecasters note the tornado threat is secondary to the wind hazard for this particular setup across northern Georgia.
Storm Coverage Scattered but Storms Can Become Very Strong
Scattered storm development is expected Saturday, meaning large areas between storms will remain dry while other locations get hit with intense, fast-moving cells. Where storms do develop across the highlighted threat zone from Chattanooga and Rome through Atlanta and toward Athens and Augusta, they carry the potential to become very strong very quickly.
Heat Wave Arriving on the Heels of Saturday’s Storms
Beyond Saturday’s storm threat, the first significant heat wave of the summer is expected to arrive across the region in the coming days. Hot and humid conditions will build outside of any storm activity Saturday, setting the stage for an oppressive heat pattern developing very soon.
