University of New Mexico law Dean faces both criticism and support over possible contract renewal

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Several students, faculty, and alumni are calling for change in leadership at the University of New Mexico’s School of Law. They said under the current Dean, Camille Carey, the school is admitting fewer local students and fewer minorities, but others are standing by Carey.

The future of New Mexico’s only law school is up in the air. The contract for Carey is ending, and it’s unclear whether it will be renewed. But some organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico and the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association said Carey should not be brought back. “We want a Dean who understands our state, understands the role of the law school in the state in educating people who are going to stay in the state and serve the state in their communities,” said Sarah Gorman, NMHBA president and an alumna of the UNM School of Law.

Gorman said many students and faculty have reached out to her, expressing their disappointment with Carey. “It ranged from the students of color not feeling like they were in a welcoming environment. And then we also heard issues with admissions,” said Gorman…
