FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A documentary detailing the moments leading up to the moment a Fort Wayne man’s sunflower was officially declared the world’s tallest will premiere in Indianapolis at the Indy Shorts film festival.
The Summit City made national headlines last year after Fort Wayne’s own, Alex Babich, completed his ambitious goal of growing the world’s tallest sunflower.
Babich’s parents emigrated from the Soviet Union after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 and planted roots in Fort Wayne. Babich’s love for gardening came from his mom and remained a constant throughout his life, eventually leading him to start a business to provide for his family. After breaking several state records for the tallest sunflower in Indiana, Babich set his sights on a bigger, taller picture, determined for his sunflowers to reach new heights.

‘Bloom’, directed by Malakai Tyne Bisel, Victoria Britton, and Derek Hockemeyer, guides viewers through Babich’s story: how he landed in Fort Wayne, what drove him to embark on the immeasurable task of growing a record-breaking sunflower, and the moment his lofty goals came to fruition.
