Siamang gibbon cares for baby bird found in enclosure at ABQ BioPark

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A young bird found itself with an unusual babysitter at the ABQ BioPark Zoo last month.

A siamang gibbon named Eve found the baby robin in her enclosure and took it upon herself to keep it safe. BioPark staff said in a Facebook video that Eve cuddled the bird, tried to nurse it, and comforted it whenever it made a noise.

She was hesitant to give the bird to the zookeepers, but eventually let them feed the bird through the wire mesh of her enclosure.

Eventually, the staff was able to safely take the bird out of the enclosure while Eve ate her breakfast. BioPark staff said that while it’s uncommon to see animals care for other species,Eve’s gentle personality and experience with babies of her own made her a great temporary bird mom…
