Oklahoma City Zoo welcomes endangered Asian elephant calf born early

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Zoo is celebrating the birth of an endangered Asian elephant calf after 31-year-old Asha gave birth Friday, June 26, months earlier than expected.

“Despite being earlier than anticipated, the calf appears healthy and is hitting all of the important milestones expected for a full-term calf,” said Rachel Boyd, OKC Zoo’s curator of elephants.

Zoo officials said Asha and her calf may remain inside the elephant barn while staff monitor bonding, nursing and the calf’s progress. The remainder of the elephant herd will continue to have access to the barn and outdoor habitat…
