Spirit of South Carolina sailing into 250 years of American independence

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — 250 years ago, Charleston took on the most powerful navy in the world at the time and won.

The Spirit of South Carolina set sail, representing the Royal British Navy to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Carolina Day and the Battle of Sullivan’s Island.

“This is the same kind of ship that you might have seen in the harbor attacking Sullivan’s Island 250 years ago,” Carin Bloom, Director of Education and Programs for Spirit of South Carolina, said. “The sail that we have, schooner gaff rig, actually is technology that hasn’t changed in about 300 years.”…
