Rockford Officials Warn Illegal Fireworks Could Lead to Fines This July 4

As Independence Day celebrations approach, and America prepares for its 250th, the Rockford Fire Department is reminding residents that consumer fireworks are illegal within the City of Rockford.

Professional Displays Encouraged Over Consumer Fireworks

RFD warned residents that anyone caught possessing, selling, or discharging them could face fines and other legal enforcement actions.

Officials are encouraging families to enjoy licensed public fireworks displays instead of setting off fireworks at home.

Fireworks Continue to Cause Thousands of Fires and Injuries

The warning from Illinois residents comes as national data highlights the dangers associated with consumer fireworks. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks sparked an estimated 32,302 fires across the United States in 2023.

Structure, vehicle, and outdoor fires resulted in an estimated 15 civilian deaths, 58 injuries, and approximately $142 million in direct property damage. There were an estimated 14,700 people injured by fireworks in 2024, a 52 percent increase over the previous year.
