Buc-ee’s, the beloved Texas-based travel center chain known for its massive stores, pristine restrooms, and extensive food offerings, is working to open another location in Virginia. The project marks an exciting development for the area along a key interstate corridor.
The Proposal
New Kent County, Virginia officials have welcomed the planned Buc-ee’s Travel Center after the company submitted a Conditional Use Permit application focused on its sign plan. The development team has collaborated closely with county planning staff and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to address required infrastructure needs.
The proposal outlines a substantial facility designed to serve travelers and locals alike. It emphasizes family-friendly amenities without accommodating large trucks, distinguishing it from traditional truck stops.
Location Details
The proposed site sits at the Exit 211 interchange along Interstate 64, roughly 25 miles east of Richmond. This strategic position also places it a relatively short distance from Interstate 95, making it a convenient stop for I-95 travelers via a quick drive of roughly 20 miles or about 25 minutes, or only 10 mile if I-95 travelers opt to take I-295 around Richmond. The development will serve drivers on one of Virginia’s busiest east-west routes while offering easy access for north-south travelers.
Plans call for a 74,000-square-foot store featuring 120 fueling positions, 557 parking spaces, 24 Tesla charging stations, and dedicated spaces for buses and RVs. The layout supports high-volume traffic while integrating with ongoing regional improvements on I-64.
Development Timeline
Initial expectations pointed to a 2027 opening, with earlier targets even referencing 2025 before coordination with major road projects pushed the date forward. The company acquired the 27-plus-acre parcel in 2023 for approximately $6.5 million.
Infrastructure Coordination and Delays
A key factor in the schedule involves the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Exit 211 Interchange Improvement Project, which will create a diverging diamond interchange. This work, currently in design with construction slated to begin in spring 2027 and finish around fall 2029, directly influences the Buc-ee’s timeline…
