CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The president of Clovis Community College says they are “reviewing how books are selected” after one of the books recommended for summer 2026 tells the story of a 17-year-old student who has an affair with her married creative writing teacher.
Half His Age is a rich character study of a yearning seventeen-year-old who disregards all obstacles — or attempts to overcome them — in her effort to be seen, to be desired, to be loved.
In a statement to YourCentralValley.com, the college’s President Dr. Kim E. Armstrong responded that “the presence of a book in the library or on the library’s website does not constitute an endorsement of its content or the views expressed by its author.”
We recognize that displays and recommendation lists can carry different meanings for different audiences. The college is reviewing how books are selected for recommendation and how context is provided, particularly when materials address sensitive subject matter.

The book’s author, Jennette McCurdy, previously wrote the widely acclaimed memoir “I’m Glad My Mom Died”, which recounts being “emotionally, mentally and physically abused” by her mother throughout her childhood.
