Great Northern Mall to be demolished soon as project moves forward, even after building catches fire

TOWN OF CLAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The owner of the former Great Northern Mall announced the old mall could come down as soon as next week, as the project moves forward despite a fire that broke out Tuesday evening, June 30.

“National Grid completed their end of the work, which was to cap the power and gas lines,” said Guy Hart, managing partner of Hart Lyman Companies. “So now we can start the exterior demolition.”

This comes after the mall caught fire, where firefighters say the fire was through the roof and in the old movie theater area. Crews had the fire under control in about 20 minutes. Investigators are still working to determine the official cause of the fire.

The fire also occurred months after Hart initially announced he planned to demolish most of the mall to make way for a new project…
