Solid Waste Services implores residents — don’t throw vapes away in the trash!

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Across the country, landfills are experiencing more fires caused by lithium-ion batteries.

The culprits are often vapes, which people incorrectly throw away in the trash, according to Anchorage’s Solid Waste Services Director Kelli Toth, who said the Anchorage Landfill is experiencing more fires as well.

“We just know that it is an issue because we’ve witnessed and seen these batteries spontaneously explode,” Toth said. “And if it explodes and catches fire with other combustibles nearby, and it happens to be near something else like a tire pile, you’ve got a perfect storm there for a very hot fire.”…
