CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Tuesday, June 30, was the last day of fiscal year 2025-26. In Montgomery County, it was revealed that Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) exceeded its legal spending authority by more than $3.5 million.
New MCPS Superintendent Dr. Kelly Guempel spoke before the board and owned up to the mistake. He said this problem should have been addressed much sooner.
“I think it was very important that Dr. Guempel came and accepted responsibility and developed some plans for the board to understand how this situation occurred and how we’re going to prevent it from happening in the future,” Montgomery County board chair April DeMotts said. “I think that was a very important opening to the meeting.”…
