Cooling centers open in Syracuse for neighbors seeking relief from record-breaking heat

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Extreme, potentially record-breaking, heat has arrived in central New York and Syracuse plans to help neighbors combat the potential dangers it can bring by opening two cooling centers. On Tuesday, Mayor Sharon Owens joined various community leaders, health department officials, and the Onondaga County Executive to address the dangers and services available for neighbors.

Please everyone be careful. We have waited a long cold winter for it to get warm, but don’t take this warning for granted and make sure that we’re taking care of each other.

According to officials, those at highest risk during periods of extreme heat include infants and young children, pregnant people, seniors, and anyone with a chronic illness that creates regulating internal body temperatures difficult. Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon recommends that people heed the warnings and advice from health officials, such as wearing the proper clothing, staying hydrated, and limiting the consumption of sugary drinks, alcohol, or excess caffeine…
