Boise-based Albertsons is running a trial on a new tracking tag in some local stores, but the company says it isn’t tied to some of its other tracking initiatives.
The company has placed small white radio frequency identifier (RFID) tags on bakery items in some stores. The tags are printed with the Albertsons logo, the name of the product, how much it sells for and a “sell thru” date. The tags also indicate they include an RFID device.
Albertsons isn’t new to using the small tracking devices. In 2004, it rolled out an RFID program to track products through its supply chain, with the tags placed on pallets and cases — but not individual products.
