Rawley Brim, born between 1810 and 1827, a carpenter and farmer, married Martha Nance, March 18, 1836, in Rockingham County. They were residents of Rockingham County and are recorded in the 1850 Census living in the Western Division of that county. There were five children, three sons, and two daughters listed in the household: James, Breny, Robert, Mary, and James. Why two James is not known, perhaps one is a relative and not a son.
Martha Nance Brim died between 1850 and 1855. After Martha’s death Rawley married Catherine Virginia Sams (or Sims), October 30, 1855, in Rockingham County. Soon after their marriage they made a move to Danbury in Stokes County. Between 1856 and 1870 they had six children, Nancy (twin), Charles (twin), Louisa, Jemima, James, and Martha. The twins and Louisa died young.
Conducting agricultural business as farmers do, Rawley made trips back to Rockingham County where, unfortunately, he made a mistake in 1862, consorting with one of the fair ladies of the county. Emoline Virgina Covington, a resident of the Dan River community began a relationship with Rawley Brim resulting in a pregnancy.
