Iowa veteran shot by stray bullet finds community through cycling program

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) — Nearly five years after a stray bullet struck him in the forehead while he was driving, Gabe Heefner is back on the road — this time on a customized trike, leading group rides for veterans across Johnson County.

In 2021, Heefner was driving eastbound on Highway 6 near Sycamore Street in Iowa City when he was hit by a stray bullet. He was 20 years old at the time, home visiting family before a three-year deployment to Japan with the Marine Corps.

“I remember going out to pick up some lunch for myself and was probably going to try and bring some back for my grandparents,” Heefner said. “As I was on the drive to go pick up the food I just like that, blacked out and don’t remember anything until I woke up a couple months later.”…
