RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — With triple-digit temperatures expected through the Fourth of July weekend, fire departments across the area are taking extra steps to keep crews safe. Firefighters said they are preparing for longer calls, faster fatigue, and more fireworks-related emergencies.
Josh Skulnik has been with the Cape Fear Rural Fire Department in Lee County for eight years. He said large incidents can now require more crews than usual, simply to keep firefighters fresh and safe.
“When we’re working one of these larger, more drawn-out incidents, it’s calling for the extra help. You might see four or five fire departments on one scene. We get tired and exhausted a lot faster and we will need that extra help to finish the job,” said Skulnik.
