From relentless work to a bed on the floor, Dad did what was needed | Column

All the accolades to my dad, Tom McEleney. The anniversary of my father’s death is July 20 and he died two years ago on that day. He would have turned 80 years old on Aug. 18. My dad was an incredible person and The following is just a snapshot of how I honor him and miss him immensely.

My dad was type of person who could have taught a class to other dads on how to be a dad. My dad never complained and he was one of the very few people that looked forward to going to work every day.

My mom got really sick when she was 39 years old and we instantly became essentially a single parent household. My dad took my mom to a number of hospitals and clinics around the Midwest to try and find out what was wrong with her and ultimately took her to Mayo in Rochester and they found out she had multiple sclerosis. My dad made sure I was taken care of. Most nights it would be “Who’s the Boss” on a small black and white TV with rabbit ear antennas. There were some difficult years, but my dad was incredibly supportive and absolutely made sure we all knew we were loved…
