The City of Denton created an inclement weather alert system for people without housing.
Denton created the text message notification system to alert people without housing when heat levels rise to yellow. Residents who use this system will receive texts indicating the day’s National Weather Service heat risk level and cool places to stay. The city then opens inclement weather stations when the HeatRisk becomes orange.
“We want to make sure that all members of the community are safe to the best of our ability,” said Julia Alessandra, social worker and City of Denton homeless programs manager. “We are providing what support we can for that purpose. That’s why we open the city facilities for cooling stations and then we fund the shelter.”…
