Sixty-four sailors and six civilians got sick after they were exposed to diesel exhaust fumes in a submarine at Naval Base Kitsap in Silverdale, Kitsap County, last week, the base said.
It’s unknown exactly what happened, but Lt. Zachary Anderson said the USS Nebraska — an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine commissioned in 1993 — operated its backup diesel generator as part of a routine pier shift at the base.
Sailors and civilians experienced coughing, headaches, lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, Anderson said. They were treated at local medical centers. Six sailors were admitted for “follow-on” care and have since been released…
