Rain and thunderstorms are moving into Alaska’s southcentral and interior regions, with the Fourth of July bearing the brunt of the wet weather. The holiday will see scattered showers developing overnight Friday, with the heaviest rain expected Saturday afternoon into evening.
What to Expect Saturday
Thunderstorms will begin developing overnight Friday and intensify Saturday, especially by afternoon going into the evening across the interior and southcentral areas. Interior locations will see temperatures stay in the low to mid 70s, while the Kenai Peninsula and coastal areas will experience cooler conditions in the low 60s.
The interior is experiencing particularly active weather, with over 100 lightning strikes reported in just the last hour Friday evening. Storm reports indicate hail between half an inch and three-quarters of an inch across the interior, along with heavy rain and gusty winds. Residents in the interior should stay alert for rapidly changing conditions.
Southcentral and Kenai Peninsula
In Anchorage, expect light rain showers early Saturday morning before the 4th of July parade. The heavier rain will arrive in the afternoon especially over the Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound, continuing through most of Sunday.
