Oldham County, Kentucky – A 26-year-old man who refused to stop for a traffic stop and led officers on a high-speed pursuit has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after his stolen vehicle slammed into an SUV, killing a 10-year-old boy inside. The September 2023 crash on a state highway north of Louisville cut short the life of Jake Luxemburger just days before his 11th birthday. The sentence, handed down this week after a guilty plea, closes a case that began with a routine attempt to pull over a vehicle on Interstate 71.
The Pursuit Unfolds
State police tried to stop the vehicle around 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 16, 2023, as it traveled south on I-71 in Oldham County. The driver, Tymetrius Walter, continued at high speed instead of pulling over. Officers soon learned the car had been reported stolen. Walter eventually took exit 14 and struck a white GMC SUV traveling north on Kentucky 329. The SUV was driven by the boy’s grandmother. The impact proved fatal for the child. His grandmother suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and received hospital treatment. Walter was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities later charged him with multiple offenses tied directly to the chase and the resulting collision.
A Child’s Day Cut Short
Jake Luxemburger had been looking forward to shopping for his upcoming birthday. His mother later recalled that he was excited that morning about the planned outing. The boy’s obituary described a typical 10-year-old who enjoyed school, time with friends, neighborhood bike rides, swimming, fishing, and video games. He also played baseball with teammates and often joined younger cousins in games at family gatherings. The crash occurred on a stretch of highway that connects local traffic with the interstate. Police reports noted the stolen vehicle’s speed and the driver’s decision to keep going despite the trooper’s signals. No other vehicles were involved in the collision itself.
Charges and Guilty Plea
Walter faced counts that included murder, wanton endangerment, assault, and fleeing or evading police. He ultimately pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while under the influence, wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, and assault. The plea avoided a trial and led directly to the 40-year prison term. The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offenses under Kentucky law. Prosecutors presented the facts of the chase and the death of the child as central elements of the case. Court records show the plea covered the core conduct that led to the fatal outcome…
