AUSTIN (KXAN) — Since birth, Andres Vega has been fighting for every heartbeat. Unlike the average person, he doesn’t take it for granted and chose to fight for the last 18 years just to be here.
Before he was born, doctors diagnosed the LBJ Early College High School graduate with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare congenital heart defect that prevented the left side of his heart from developing properly. The diagnosis marked the beginning of a journey filled with surgeries, hospital stays and uncertainty for both Vega and his mother, Jasmine Molina.
