Autism safety: prevention and response

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – In light of the recent, tragic passing of seven-year-old Harbe Nagi, we hosted a special conversation focusing on safety education when it comes to autism on News10 ABC in the Morning. Tracy Schober, executive director of the Autism Society Greater Hudson Region, and Shahrukh Sultan, podcast host of “Speaking of the Spectrum” joined Valerie Wencis to share some helpful tools for the community when it comes to preventing wandering from happening, and knowing the actions to take if it does.

In this conversation you’ll learn:

  • What everyone should know about autism and wandering
  • How to evaluate any situation facing a loved one with autism and put a plan in place by identifying risks, discovering strategies, and learning about tools and resources that are available to help
  • Why everyone needs to know about these safety concerns, and how you can learn more and help spread the word
  • Details for a special event taking place July 11 honoring Harbe Nagi’s memory.

Al Hidaya Center and the Autism Society Greater Hudson Region will host a special workshop on creating a wandering safety plan on Monday, July 6 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at 322 Troy Schenectady Road in Latham. That event will be located in Al Hidaya Center’s gymnasium.
