ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Hundreds of people celebrated Independence Day by the ocean, leaving behind piles of trash in the sand, but local volunteers turned out Sunday to clean up the mess.
July 5 is known as the dirtiest beach day of the year, according to the Surfrider Foundation, whose members turned out Sunday morning — trash bags and pickers in hand — in Atlantic Beach as part of the group’s nationwide cleanup effort.
“Obviously, our cities do what they can do to clean up after the larger fireworks,” said Leah Pegram, vice chair of the Grand Strand Surfriders chapter. “But you still have a lot of tourists that come into town, locals that are out on the beach shooting fireworks, celebrating throughout the weekend.”…
