Mound fire chief retires after more than 5 decades of service

After 51 years with the Mound Fire Department, outgoing Fire Chief Greg Pederson answered his final call on Tuesday. Pederson was also recognized at the June 23 Mound City Council meeting, where several members of the next generation of firefighters were sworn in.

Pederson joined the Mound Fire Department in 1975, shortly after moving to Mound from his hometown of Willmar, Minnesota.

“I worked at Tonka Toys for 18 years, and it was a huge advantage for Tonka Toys to have a good fire department,” he said. “There were about 11 or 13 other employees who also served as firefighters. We were just two blocks away from the station, and they let us leave during work hours to answer the pager without docking our pay.”…
