Lightning sparks 2 small fires west of Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The Colorado Springs Fire Department is praising its drone team for helping to locate two small fires in the mountains before they could spread.

The fire department was alerted Sunday morning to smoke southwest of Colorado Springs, near Mount Rosa.

“Our Special Operations drone team launched a drone and quickly located two lightning-caused fires burning in rugged, forested terrain, both less than an acre,” CSFD said in a social media post. “Our drone operator provided precise GPS coordinates to our partners with the [U.S. Forest Service Pike and San Isabel], allowing their resources, including Boise Helitak, to respond quickly before the fires had a chance to grow.”…
