Opinion | America’s sad celebration

Ever since I was a kid, the Fourth of July has always been a favorite holiday in my family.

Picnics, ballgames and fireworks all come together to celebrate the day America declared its independence and started this country on the historic and bumpy path, now 250 years in the making.

My reverence for the Fourth was undoubtedly inspired by my late father, who even in his adulthood had a childlike fascination for fireworks and all the hoopla we Americans devise to celebrate our country’s birthday. Throwing off the shackles of a monarchy and creating a country ruled by the people was indeed cause for celebration…
