Grave Of Freed Black Person Who Died In 1729 Discovered In Boston Graveyard

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The grave of a freed Black person who died in 1729 has been discovered and restored in the Granary Burying Ground in Boston.

The city said the name on the gravestone was simply ‘Boston.’ Kelly Thomas, director of Historic Burying Grounds for the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, said she noticed it during a restoration project. Some gravestones had been removed and worked on in a climate-controlled studio.

“I was reviewing the photos of the headstones, and then I noticed that the stone only had one name,” Thomas said. A lack of a surname indicated that the person was enslaved, or had been enslaved. ‘Boston’ had free for about 30 years at the time of his death…
