KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — About 10,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed into a Kalamazoo street Monday because of a broken pipe that was clogged by rags, the city said.
Around 1:45 p.m., the Kalamazoo Department of Public Services was called to a sanitary sewer overflow on Emerald Drive near Miller Road. Crews investigated to find that the overflow was due to a blockage caused by a combination of rags and a broken sanitary sewer pipe, the city said. They were able to clear the blockage and normal flow was back just before 4 p.m.

About 10,000 gallons of wastewater were estimated to have spilled during the leak. Crews cleaned the area after service was restored, Kalamazoo said. Emerald Drive will be closed at Miller Road until further notice, Kalamazoo said.
A no-contact advisory was issued by the Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department for Davis Creek from Miller Road north to the Kalamazoo River. People should avoid swimming, wading, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and letting pets in the creek, Kalamazoo said.
