Inns of Altamont seeks $3M in tax breaks from Guilderland IDA

GUILDERLAND — The developer of the long-vacant Peter Young Center is seeking approximately $3 million in tax breaks from the town of Guilderland to help convert the former seminary and treatment center into a 30-room boutique hotel with wedding venue and spa.

The mid-century brick building is perched above the village of Altamont on a shoulder of the Helderberg escarpment — the site where, in the 1880s, Colonel Walter S. Church, who was known for dunning tenant farmers, built a massive resort hotel for wealthy vacationers, the Kushaqua.

The project application was before the board of the Guilderland Industrial Development Agency during its June 30 meeting; the board voted unanimously to schedule a public hearing on the request for its July 28 meeting, but noted the date is subject to change…
