S.F. supe who accepted pricey portrait of himself gets $4,500 ethics fine

San Francisco Supervisor Shamann Walton has agreed to pay $4,500 in penalties after city ethics investigators found he illegally accepted an expensive gift painting of himself and voted on a lucrative contract for a nonprofit that had paid for his travel.

The proposed settlement, made public Monday, was reached between Walton and the San Francisco Ethics Commission more than a year after the Chronicle first reported that Walton had received the portrait from the nonprofit Urban Ed Academy. The painting cost $5,500 — far more than the $590 value of a gift Walton was allowed to accept.

The agreement also stems from Walton voting to increase a contract for the nonprofit Bay Area Community Resources by nearly $4.8 million shortly after the organization had paid $1,679.30 for him to attend a conference in Colorado…
