COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – With temperatures running high in the Columbus area, veterinarians and animal shelters are urging pet owners to take extra precautions, as heat can turn dangerous for animals.
Dr. Lauren Keyser, lead veterinarian at Animal General Hospital in Columbus, said everyday habits may need to change during periods of extreme heat.
“Normal everyday activities, people probably quickly leave your dog in the car to go to the gas station, you’re taking them on a walk during midday when it’s the hottest, those are the little things we need to change during when it starts getting so hot to help protect our animals,” Keyser said.
Adjusting routines
Keyser said adjustments can be straightforward. She recommended shifting afternoon walks to the morning or evening and suggested pressing the back of a hand to asphalt or concrete to test the surface temperature before walking a pet on it…
