MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – A $53 million indoor activities facility planned for Linn-Mar Community School District is being restructured into two phases after a change in state law reduced the district’s projected sales tax revenue by $13 million over the next decade.
The district had already contracted with an architect to build a facility that would serve athletes in physical education classes and girls wrestling, and also function as a storm shelter.
State law shifts SAVE funds
The change involves Iowa’s statewide penny sales tax, known as SAVE. A new state law moved a portion of those funds from schools to property tax relief, reducing the money available to the district for the project.
