EPISD considers bond initiative worth up to $450M for campus improvements

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — After declaring financial exigency last month amid a multi-million dollar budget deficit, the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is considering a bond initiative worth up to $450 million.

EPISD’s Citizens Bond Steering Committee has identified over $1 billion in unfunded campus improvements and deferred maintenance. The potential November bond would address a large portion of these projects, and would be split into three considerations: campus improvements, technology, and athletic stadiums.

Shane Mercer, a member of EPISD’s Citizens Bond Steering Committee, joined KTSM 9 News anchor Andy Morgan on Tuesday, July 7, to discuss a potential bond, what the funds would cover, and what it could cost taxpayers.
