OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A First Alert 6 investigation is helping disabled veterans get a new tax break they deserve. Many did not know a Nebraska law passed in January exempts their motor vehicle tax and fee. Since the investigation, several veterans have asked for refunds — and some have been successful.
The law and the confusion
The law requires disabled veterans to file at the Veterans Service Office and apply within 30 days of registering their vehicle. Those who missed the deadline asked the Sarpy County Board of Equalization to refund the vehicle tax and fee they already paid this year.
Sarpy County Treasurer Jeff Mikesell, a former Air Force pilot, says his office has been working to alert disabled veterans about the new tax break.
“So we hit them three ways — big lobby picture, sign at the counter window, then our customer service associates ask,” Mikesell said.
Veterans speak out
John Boden, a disabled Air Force veteran, received a service-connected disability approval from the VA the day after he registered his car. He demanded a refund of the motor vehicle tax and fee he had already paid…
