KBI report: Kansas crime rate reaches 57-year low despite rise in violent offenses

Local and state law enforcement agencies submit their crime statistics to the KBI, which then uses the data to track crime trends across state.

The 2025 report says that overall crime was down almost 20% from the 10-year average. The KBI said the crime rate fell to its lowest level in 57 years.

Property crime — which includes burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson — decreased 8.3% between 2024 and 2025, the data show. Property crime was 25% below the 10-year average, according to the report.

But the report said violent crime rose last year after two years of decline. About 13,600 violent crimes — which include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault and aggravated battery — were reported in 2025. It’s an increase of 7.5% over 2024.

The increase in volent crime is partly due to an 8.5% increase in aggravated assaults and batteries. Those crimes were 15.2% over the 10-year average.

The KBI said 122 murders were reported in 2025, a 4.3% increase from 2024. That number are still almost 20% below the 10-year average, according to the KBI.
