First Iowa measles case of 2026 confirmed; state identifies exposure locations

DES Moines, Iowa — Iowa health officials have confirmed the state’s first measles case of 2026 in a vaccinated adult from central Iowa who contracted the virus while traveling internationally.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services announced the case Tuesday and released a list of businesses and public locations where the individual may have exposed others while contagious.

Anyone who was at the following locations during the listed times should monitor for measles symptoms for 21 days after their potential exposure:

  • Dollar General, 1428 E. Ovid Ave., Des Moines — July 1, 7:30-9:45 p.m.
  • Family Dollar, 1251 University Ave., Des Moines — July 1, 8-10:30 p.m.
  • MercyOne Des Moines Pediatrics Urgent Care, 330 Laurel St., Suite 2100, Des Moines — July 2, 3-5:30 p.m.
  • MercyOne Des Moines Imaging (Outpatient Radiology), 1111 Sixth Ave., Des Moines — July 2, 3:45-6:45 p.m.
  • Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal Church, 3848 14th St., Des Moines — July 2, 7:30-11:30 p.m.
  • Casa De Restauracion, 821 Seneca St., Webster City — July 3, 4:30 p.m.-2 a.m. July 4
  • Kwik Star, 505 Fair Meadow Drive, Webster City — July 3, 7:30-9:30 p.m.
  • Under Armour Factory House, 771 Bass Pro Drive NW, Suite 225, Altoona — July 4, 5 a.m.-noon
  • Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal Church, 3848 14th St., Des Moines — July 4, 7:30-11:30 p.m.
