Man accused of robbery, forcing victim to do push-ups in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department says a man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly robbing another man and forcing him to do push-ups.

The incident happened just after noon and was reported by a witness to the robbery, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the DMPD. The 911 caller said they were witnessing the crime at 12th Street and Mulberry Street.

DMPD officers who were nearby arrived within moments and took Anthony Lavon Liggins, 28, into custody in connection with the crime. Sgt. Parizek said investigators learned Liggins had approached the male victim, 44, and asked for a cigarette. The victim replied that he didn’t smoke, and Liggins allegedly ordered him to the ground and then took cash and other items from his pocket. The victim also told police that Liggins forced him to do push-ups after the robbery.

Liggins is charged with second-degree robbery and false imprisonment. He is being held in the Polk County Jail.
