Old Town tradition: Scrapfest is returning Friday

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Scrapfest starts up Friday July 10, in Old Town, and it seems like it’s only getting bigger. This is the 16th annual Scrapfest, and special to this year – every piece in the festival has a little metal tag to signify the collection. 6 News spoke with the founder of Scrapfest, David Such, who stores the sculptures in his studio – Struk Studio, ahead of the competition.

Such says that the competition starts with the artists gathering the metal at the local scrap yard – from that point, they have one month to turn that trash into treasure. Contestants enter extra small, small, and large art into the competition, drawing from a variety of ideas.

Ron Dyrcz, who is from Illinois, is a first-time participant in the competition, and draws his inspiration from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula’s role in the industrial revolution. He wanted to display that role and pay homage to the many Michiganders that played a part.

“The Industrial Revolution, the automobile revolution that happened all throughout Michigan, really gets represented in a lot of the art, and it kind of inspires people to remember how things were and how things can be,” says Ron Dyrcz…
