Wichita festival will promote healthy living through Native foods

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Mid-America All-Indian Museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary by cooking up some healthy Native dishes.

Kaleigh Huxley, the museum’s education coordinator, stopped by KSN on Wednesday to talk about the Native Foods and Wellness Festival.

The museum is hosting the festival in partnership with Hunter Health, which got its start in the MAAIM building 50 years ago. The event is part of the museum’s anniversary celebration and is meant to highlight Hunter Health’s past.

“We wanted to do something to honor Hunter Health and their history in our building because our building was meant to be half museum, half an area for social services for Native people,” Huxley said.

The clinic will offer free blood pressure checks, dental screenings and tests for symptoms of groundwater contamination exposure during the festival. It will also bring in Native chef Jason Champagne from Lawrence to cook several food samples…
