It’s a big day for the Kent County Sheriff’s Office. Earlier today, after 37 years of service in the department, with the past eight as sheriff, Sheriff Michelle LaJoy announced her retirement.
While the department prepares for that major leadership change, our local police are also back in the spotlight for a completely different reason. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is featured in a brand-new episode of “The Shift”—and it airs tonight!

About The Shift YouTube Police Documentary Series
If you missed the first time they highlighted West Michigan, “The Shift” is a YouTube documentary series from Red Watch Productions. It skips the polished, overly dramatic Hollywood style you often see on TV. There are no narrators or staged reenactments. Instead, it uses fly-on-the-wall bodycam and dashcam footage to drop you right into the front seat for an entire day on patrol.
What is on the New Kent County Episode?
This time around, the show follows Deputy Kauffman and Deputy Kelderman. Red Watch warns that this particular shift goes from routine to wild fast.
The day starts out normal enough with a custody exchange, standard traffic stops, welfare checks, and what the crew calls one of the most memorable intoxicated pedestrians they have ever witnessed.
