MANLIUS, N.Y. — The Manlius Town Board voted 7-0 Wednesday night to approve a one-year moratorium on data processing centers and commercial cryptocurrency mining operations in the town.
Board members said large data centers threaten the affordability of the community, along with its water supply and environment. They pointed to rising utility bills and outages already affecting Central New York residents, saying the moratorium gives the town time to set its own terms for development rather than leaving decisions to outside developers.
