Pinellas County Schools begin round 2 of possible closures, say low enrollment could last till 2050

GULPORT, Fla. (WFLA) — Pinellas County Schools held three “Planning for Progress” community meetings across the district Thursday to discuss potential school changes for the 2027-2028 school year with parents.

The district’s initiative is geared toward fiscal responsibility and space allocation by closing and consolidating different schools across the county.

“Kids have a lot of partnerships, relationships built in that school. So if they have to go to another school, there’s anxiety… new teachers, new environment. Those are things that I would worry about as a parent,” said Ben Wyatt.

Superintendent Kevin Hendrick spoke at Boca Ciega High School Thursday, primarily educating parents and educators on declining enrollment numbers. Approximately 45,000 open seats exist throughout the district, and only about 68% of the 7,600 babies born in Pinellas County attend public schools, according to PCS…
