Commuters who ride BART’s Red Line between Richmond and San Francisco International Airport are getting used to the rush hour scuffle, when hundreds of people jostle for space on a snug eight-car train.
That should change on July 20, when the transit agency rolls out longer trains on the Red Line route, and three others, along with scheduling changes to make service more efficient.
During peak hours, riders on the popular red and Yellow Lines will board 10-car trains, while their counterparts on the green and Blue Lines will take 8-car trains, all lengthened to accommodate the throngs of people who have returned to offices in downtown San Francisco. Additionally, trains carrying people home to Berkeley, El Cerrito or Richmond will be “more evenly spaced apart,” according to a BART news release, with 10 minutes between them instead of the alternating 5- and 15-minute waits people endure today…
