Man bit by rattlesnake in California barely survives after 54 antivenom doses

OROVILLE, Calif. (KTLA) – An Idaho man visiting family in Northern California narrowly survived two rattlesnake bites, one of which landed deep in a vein and necessitated more than 50 doses of antivenom.

The frightening May 26 incident happened in Oroville, a Butte County town about 130 miles from Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada state line.

Chris Howarth told SFGATE he had stepped into his parents’ backyard to check on the waterline after some particularly wet weather. Thinking he had stepped on something sharp, he looked down and saw the rattlesnake…
