‘Radioactive Love Canal’: A community’s call for action

TOWN OF NIAGARA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two residents in the Town of Niagara said state environmental officials informed them in March that there could be radioactive contamination on their properties and sought permission to conduct more in-depth surveys – but only if they waived their rights to any claims for reimbursement.

On Friday at John Nielsen Park on Pomeroy Avenue, Carolyn Johnson and Lexi Hawk were joined by more than two dozen other residents and activists outraged by what they deemed a lack of transparency from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Both Hawk and Johnson said they felt pressured to sign the waivers…
