Lowcountry mom shares son’s near-fatal drowning story to help other families stay safe

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) — What looks like an ordinary retention pond to most people is a place Holly Summers will never see the same way again.

Just days before her son Grant’s fourth birthday, the Cane Bay family says Grant wandered away from their home and into the retention pond behind it. Grant, who has autism and Duchenne muscular dystrophy, was found unresponsive.

His parents performed CPR before first responders rushed him to MUSC. Grant spent more than 100 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit before beginning inpatient rehabilitation, where he is now working through daily physical, occupational and speech therapy…
