Possible dry thunderstorms in Bay Area pose wildfire risk

LIVERMORE, Calif. (KRON) — A weather pattern that brings a risk of lightning with little to no precipitation is moving toward the Bay Area over the weekend and into next week, according to the National Weather Service. While the likelihood of dry thunderstorms for portions of the Bay Area remains low, it is elevating fire weather concerns for officials.

The threat comes from monsoonal moisture in the mid-to-upper atmosphere that is moving northward in California, NWS said. This pattern, according to forecasters, pairs risk of dry thunderstorms with the region’s already dry vegetation.

“This is considered a low probability, high impact scenario where if a thunderstorm is able to develop, the fire weather threat is high,” NWS forecasters wrote Friday.
